在美国,统计学也是近年来非常热门的申请专业之一,一方面因为该专业的申请难度相对较低,另一方面就职范围较广(统计局,银行、保险公司、证券公司等金融部门,市场调查公司、咨询公司、各公司的市场研究部门,工业企业的质量检测部门等企业事业单位)。但同时也正是因为这两个原因,加剧了统计专业的申请竞争。美国统计学申请主要有四大方向:生物统计、金融统计、应用统计和数学统计。
数学与统计学的区别
统计学分数理统计和经济统计两个方向。其中数理统计是属于数学科目里面的一个分支,数学从某种意义上说可以是统计学的基础。统计偏向分支,更加细化,没有数学那么宽泛;经济统计是偏向统计学知识在经济中的应用的。
统计学专业提供的学位
从美国开设统计学专业的学校来看,统计学大致可以分为两类,一类是偏向于理论研究的,另一类是偏向于实际应用的。前者主要包括统计系或者数学系下的统计学,后者包含的方面就非常的广泛了,包括:数理统计、生物统计、环境统计、金融统计、经济统计、遗传统计、农业统计等等。这些是统计在其他领域的应用而形成的研究分支。
申请要求
具备良好的数学背景是普遍的要求。美国大学在招生时,比较倾向于理工科背景的学生,尤其是本科期间统计学或者数学系的学生。多数学校会明确要求学生修过数学类的基础课程,如数学分析、高等代数(或者是高等数学)、统计的基础课程、实分析等课程。除此之外,一些计算软件,如SPSS、Eviews、MATLAB、SAS等的熟练操作和使用也是录取委员比较看重的方面。虽然学校招生没有对工作经验有明确要求,但相关的实习经历、参与过学术项目可大大提升申请成功率。
开设统计学专业的学校对数学要求总的包括以下几个科目:
线性代数、微积分学/高等微积分/多变量微积分、数值分析、生物学、遗传学、SAS统计分析系统、数学、社会科学、概率学、统计学、生物统计学。
标准化考试成绩
统计学专业申请学校基本上都需要学生提交GRE成绩,需要注意的是GRE考试中的数学科目考试,多数学校不要求,但是有这一门分数对申请有所帮助。就TOEFL考试成绩,综排前150的要求不尽相同,分数从68到100+不等。调研结果显示,TOP10学校基本都要求TOEFL成绩在100分以上, TOP20-30学校要求从79分到100分不等,另外有些学校也会给出考试各部分的分数要求。GPA的最低要求3.0。
申请截止日期
根据综排TOP150的调研,开设统计学专业的学校还是在多数,并且有些学校既开有生物统计学,也有统计学或应用统计学。而学校的申请截止时间从十一月到次年七月不同。据官网已发布的申请截止日期较早的为11月15号(有杜兰大学),12月、1月、2月为多数学校的截止日期。
就业前景
学生毕业后除了选择国家统计部门外,还可就职于制药、生物制药公司或非制药公司如:医疗机构、证券分析和保险公司。应用统计毕业生可以从事数学研究、统计学研究、运筹学研究、计算机编程、数学分析、会计、证券分析等职业。具体的职业列出如下:
